A Facebook group that encourages people to “down syndrome” their pets has been hit with a lawsuit from a woman who claims she suffered cat-related complications after sharing a meme about the disease.
Emily K. from Virginia has claimed the meme, which features a picture of a cat on the floor and the caption “Cats down syndrome is not a joke,” was posted by a friend.
The meme, known as Cat Down Syndrome is not funny, said Emily, an American student and pet owner.
“I didn’t think it was funny, and when I saw it on Facebook I immediately took a screenshot and sent it to my friend,” Emily said.

I say it is” has been retweeted more than 1,000 times, and the meme has been linked to on-line communities such as Reddit.
“There is no such thing as a joke about cats down the syndrome,” Emily told the BBC.
“A cat is a human being, and they’re a sentient being.”
